It was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat. The film is set in 1944 in Normandy, France, during World War II. It follows a group of soldiers led by Captain John Miller. Their mission is to find Private James Francis Ryan and bring him home. This request comes because Ryan's three brothers were all killed in action. The film explores the heavy emotional and physical costs of combat.

The story begins with the intense landings at Omaha Beach.

Captain Miller leads the 2nd Ranger Battalion up cliffs to stop German coastal defenses. After the landing, the U.S. Department of War learns of the Ryan brothers' deaths. General George C. Marshall orders the rescue of the last surviving son, James Francis Ryan. Miller assembles a small detachment to find him. The team includes soldiers like Mike Horvath, Richard Reiben, and the medic Irwin Wade. They also include Timothy Upham, an interpreter with no combat experience.

The mission moves through several difficult stages and locations. The group first travels to the town of Neuville-au-Plain. There, they lose a comrade, Adrian Caparzo, to a German sniper. The men struggle with resentment about risking their lives for one person. They eventually find a man named James Frederick Ryan, but he is the wrong soldier. Later, the group must travel to the town of Ramelle. There, they find the real James Francis Ryan, who refuses to leave his post. The mission ends with a final battle to defend a vital bridge.

The film's concept was inspired by real historical accounts.

Writer Robert Rodat was inspired by the book "D-Day June 6, 1944" by Stephen E. Ambrose. He also studied the real-life stories of families like the Niland brothers. In that case, multiple brothers were killed in action during the war. Rodat wanted to show the inconceivable pain of losing many sons from one family. This connection to real history helped shape the film's serious tone.

Producing the film required massive resources and careful planning. The budget was between $65 million and $70 million. Filming took place from June to September 1997 in England and Ireland. The opening battle at Omaha Beach was especially expensive. It cost $12 million to film over a four-week period. This single scene used 1,500 background actors to create a sense of scale. To ensure authenticity, the main cast attended a week-long boot camp. They needed to understand the real experience of being a soldier.

Saving Private Ryan was a massive success at the box office. It earned $481.8 million during its release. This made it the second-highest-grossing film of 1998. The film received critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of combat. Many World War II veterans said the scenes were the most realistic they had ever seen. Some veterans even found the scenes too difficult to watch due to traumatic memories. The film won many prestigious awards, including Academy, BAFTA, and Golden Globe awards.

The film's impact reaches far beyond the cinema. Its filming techniques inspired many later war, action, and superhero movies. Numerous directors have cited the film as a major influence on their work. It also helped renew public interest in World War II history. This interest led to new films, television shows, and video games. In 2014, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation.
