The mission begins after the landings at Omaha Beach. Captain Miller leads his team to find Ryan in the town of Neuville-au-Plain. Along the way, the soldiers face many dangers and lose some of their friends. They even have to defend a vital bridge in a town called Ramelle. The film shows how these men feel about their difficult jobs. It captures both their fear and their sense of duty.

This movie was inspired by real stories from the past.

Writer Robert Rodat read a book by Stephen E. Ambrose about the D-Day landings. He also learned about families like the Niland brothers. In that real story, several brothers were serving in the war at once. The film uses these true ideas to make the story feel meaningful. It tries to show the heavy cost of war on real families. This connection to history makes the movie very special to many people.

Making the film was a huge job that cost a lot of money.
