Kidman's journey into performing began with a foundation in movement and discipline. She was enrolled in ballet classes at the age of three. During her teenage years, she studied drama and mime at the Phillip Street Theatre and the Australian Theatre for Young People. For Kidman, acting served as a vital refuge from her natural shyness. As a child, she was very timid and even struggled with a stutter. She eventually chose to pursue acting full-time by leaving high school to focus on her craft.

Her early life was marked by international movement and diverse cultural influences. She was born on June 20, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her Australian parents were in the United States on student visas at the time. Because of her birthplace, she was given the Hawaiian name Hōkūlani, which means "heavenly star." Her father was a biochemist and clinical psychologist, while her mother was a nursing instructor. The family eventually returned to Australia when she was three years old. She grew up in the Longueville suburb of Sydney, attending North Sydney Girls High School.

Kidman's professional breakthrough occurred through a series of significant roles in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She made her film debut in 1983 with the Australian film Bush Christmas. Her international recognition grew significantly after starring in the 1989 thriller Dead Calm.

This role showcased her ability to bring tenacity and energy to a character. In 1990, she appeared in the sports action film Days of Thunder, which was a major commercial success. This film helped establish her presence in the global film market. She continued to build her reputation through various roles in both Australian and American productions.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Kidman reached a peak of critical and commercial acclaim. She starred in the musical Moulin Rouge! in 2001, for which she received her first Academy Award nomination.

That same year, she appeared in the psychological horror film The Others, which grossed over $210 million worldwide. Her most significant career milestone came in 2002 with the film The Hours. For her portrayal of author Virginia Woolf, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. To achieve this role, she used prosthetics on her nose to transform her appearance.

Beyond acting, Kidman has expanded her influence through production and humanitarian work. In 2010, she founded her own production company, Blossom Films. She has also dedicated significant time to global service as a goodwill ambassador. She has worked with UNICEF since 1994 and with UNWomen since 2006.

Her impact is recognized by major publications; Time included her on its list of the 100 most influential people in 2004 and 2018. The New York Times also named her one of the greatest actors of the 21st century in 2020.
