The movie is known for its bright and bold look. The creators used many vivid primary colors, especially red. They wanted the world to feel like a dream or a nightmare. To do this, they used a special way to print colors called the imbibition Technicolor process. This was one of the last times this method was used in Rome. The colors look very strong, almost like a cartoon.

Many ideas helped shape this story. Argento used an 1845 essay by Thomas De Quincey called Suspiria de Profundis. He also worked with Daria Nicolodi to write the script. They included themes from fairy tales like Snow White and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Nicolodi even used a story from her grandmother about a scary dance school. The film is the first in a series called The Three Mothers. The other two films are Inferno and The Mother of Tears.

Making the film involved many talented people and places. Jessica Harper played the lead role of Suzy. The music was made by a rock band called Goblin. They worked with Argento to create the score before filming began. Most of the movie was filmed at De Paoli studios in Rome. However, some parts were shot in Munich, Germany. They even built a fake version of a building called the Whale House for the sets.

The film was so special that it inspired a new movie in 2018. This new version was directed by Luca Guadagnino. People still study how the film uses color and sound today. It remains a famous example of how art can feel both beautiful and scary.
