He is remembered as one of the most influential bodybuilders in history. Reeves helped popularize bodybuilding on a global scale. His fame came from both his physical achievements and his cinematic presence. He transitioned from a world-class athlete to a major international movie star. During the mid-1950s, he became a leading figure in Italian-made sword-and-sandal films.

Reeves followed a very disciplined and specific training regimen. He performed full-body workouts three days every week. He avoided split workouts, which focus on only one muscle group at a time. For every exercise, he completed three sets of 8 to 12 repetitions. He did not follow a strict schedule regarding time. Instead, he worked until his entire routine was finished. These sessions often lasted between two and four hours. This method allowed him to develop a highly symmetrical and classic physique.

His bodybuilding success was defined by several major titles. In 1947, he was named Mr. America. He followed this by winning the Mr. World title in 1948. In 1950, he achieved the title of Mr. Universe. These honors occurred during the pre–Mr. Olympia era of the sport. His physical appearance eventually led an agent to suggest an acting career. This transition would eventually make him the highest-paid actor in Europe at the peak of his career.

Reeves' acting career was defined by epic historical and mythological roles.

He was most famous for playing the hero Hercules. He portrayed this character in the 1958 film *Hercules* and its 1959 sequel, *Hercules Unchained*. The first film was a low-budget epic inspired by the tales of Jason and the Argonauts. It became a massive success in the United States, grossing $5 million in 1959. He also played characters such as Hadji Murad in *The White Warrior*. He portrayed Emiliano in *Terror of the Barbarians*, which was released in North America as *Goliath and the Barbarians*. This film earned $1.6 million during its initial release.

As his popularity grew, Reeves took on even more diverse roles. He played the messenger Pheidippides in *The Giant of Marathon*. This film was a significant commercial success, earning $1,335,000 in the US and Canada. He also played the pirate Captain Henry Morgan in *Morgan the Pirate*. Other notable roles included Karim in *The Thief of Baghdad* and Aeneas in *The Trojan Horse*. He played Sandokan in two films titled *Sandokan the Great* and *Pirates of Malaysia*. By this stage in his career, his salary had risen to $250,000 per film.

However, the physical demands of acting took a toll on his body. While filming *The Last Days of Pompeii* in 1959, Reeves dislocated his shoulder. This injury occurred when a chariot slammed into a tree. He re-injured the same shoulder during an underwater escape scene. The damage was aggravated by the stunt work required in his subsequent films. These physical injuries, along with high stress and a declining film market, eventually led to his retirement. He also faced health challenges later in life, including lymphoma. He passed away on May 1, 2000, from a blood clot.

In his later years, Reeves sought a quieter life away from the spotlight. He moved to a ranch in Valley Center, California.

There, he focused on breeding horses and promoting drug-free bodybuilding. He remained dedicated to the principles of natural physical training. He even wrote books on the subject, including *Building the Classic Physique - The Natural Way*. His legacy continues through the Steve Reeves International Society, which he co-founded in 1994. He remains a symbol of the connection between physical discipline and global stardom.
