It is held annually and is sanctioned by the IFBB Professional League. Joe Weider founded the contest to provide a path for amateur Mr. Universe winners. He wanted these athletes to continue competing at a professional level and earn money. The event serves as the highest stage for men to showcase their physical development. It is the ultimate goal for many professional bodybuilders around the world.

To compete at this level, athletes must navigate a rigorous qualifying process. The IFBB organizes an Olympia Qualifying Season that lasts for one full year. This season concludes a few months before the main event. Under rules updated in 2019, athletes must meet specific criteria to enter. They might place in the top three of their division at the previous Olympia. Other athletes can qualify by winning an IFBB qualifying contest. Some competitors earn their spot by accumulating high total points from second through fifth-place finishes. The IFBB Professional League also has the discretion to issue special invitations.

Bodybuilding competitions are organized into several distinct divisions. The Open division is the most famous and focuses on maximum muscle mass. Since 2012, the 212 division has provided a category for different weight classes. The Men's Physique division was introduced in 2013. In 2016, the Classic Physique division was added to the program. This specific category emphasizes symmetry, proportion, and pleasing lines rather than sheer size. It also prizes a small waist. Other categories include the Wheelchair Olympia, which was added in 2018.

The history of the contest began on September 18, 1965. The first event took place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City. Larry Scott won this inaugural title and also won in 1966. In 1967, Sergio Oliva, known as "The Myth," won and changed the sport. He displayed an unforeseen level of muscle definition and a "V" shaped upper body. The 1970s saw the rise of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He won several titles and became a global star. The 1977 film *Pumping Iron* documented the 1975 competition in South Africa. This film helped launch the acting careers of Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, and Franco Columbu.

The sport has experienced various eras and shifts in training. During the 1960s, the emergence of Dianabol, an anabolic steroid, changed how athletes trained. Many bodybuilders used these substances to intensify their regimens. By the late 1980s and 2010s, the sport entered the "Mass Monster" era. During this time, competitors reached muscle mass levels that surpassed previous limits. This era coincided with the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990. In the 1990s, Dorian Yates revolutionized the sport. He combined massive size with what was called "granite hardness."

Success in the Olympia is measured by legendary winning streaks. Lee Haney and Ronnie Coleman both hold the record with eight total wins. Haney won eight consecutive titles from 1984 to 1991. Ronnie Coleman, nicknamed "The King," won eight consecutive titles from 1998 to 2005.
