These awards recognize world-class talent in many different areas. They honor actors, dancers, and singers who perform on stage. People also win for designing sets, costumes, or lighting. The awards cover plays, musicals, dance, and opera. Winning an Olivier is considered the highest honor in British theatre. It is similar to the BAFTA Awards for film or the Tony Awards on Broadway. People value these awards because they show great skill and hard work.

Specific groups of people work hard to choose the winners each year. For opera, dance, and affiliate shows, special judging panels are formed. These panels include professionals like journalists and casting directors. They also include members of the public who love London theatre. These judges first select the most worthy shows for a nomination. Then, they vote for the final winner at the end of the period. For theatre awards, the public helps create a longlist of shows. Members of the Society of London Theatre then vote to pick the nominees and winners.

The history of these awards began in 1976. They were first started by the Society of London Theatre. At that time, they were called the Society of West End Theatre Awards. An artist named Tom Merrifield designed the original awards. The very first ceremony took place in December 1976 at the Café Royal. In 1984, the awards were renamed to honor a famous English actor. His name was Laurence Olivier, and he gave his consent for the change. This name change helped the awards become even more famous.

Many different places in London have hosted these big celebrations. The ceremony was held at the Royal Opera House from 2012 to 2016. In 2017, the event moved to the Royal Albert Hall. The Grosvenor House Hotel is also a very important venue for the awards. It has hosted the after-show reception nine different times. Television coverage has also changed over the years. The first ceremony on TV was in 1981 on BBC1. Since 2013, the shows have been broadcast on ITV1 during prime time.

Some shows and people have reached amazing milestones at the awards. The play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child won nine awards in 2017. This is the record for the most awards won by one production. Several musicals like Matilda and Hamilton have each won seven awards. Some individuals are also very successful. Judi Dench has won seven competitive awards. She is tied with William Dudley and Matthew Bourne for the most wins. Paule Constable holds a record with seventeen different nominations. These numbers show how much talent is in London theatre.
