His work has helped many shows travel to different countries. He even found ways to bring musicals to places where they were rarely seen before. This helped make musical theatre a massive brand for everyone to enjoy.

Making a musical is a big job with many steps. Mackintosh often works with talented writers and directors to build a show. For example, he worked with the team Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil to bring Les Misérables to London. He also worked with Disney to turn Mary Poppins into a stage musical. He even used a television show to find actors for a new version of Oliver!. Some of his shows, like Hamilton, were brought from Broadway to the West End in London. He uses his skill to make sure these stories reach as many people as possible.

His love for the stage began when he was only eight years old. His aunt took him to see a musical called Salad Days. This moment made him realize he wanted to work in theatre. He started his career at the very bottom as a stagehand at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. A stagehand is a person who works behind the scenes to help the show run. He then became an assistant stage manager for shows that traveled to different cities. By the 1970s, he was producing his own small tours in London.

Many of his shows have broken records for how long they run. Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera are the two longest-running musicals in West End history. He also produced Cats, which became a huge hit in 1981. In 1996, he was knighted for his many services to musical theatre. This is a very high honor from the Queen. In 2008, he was ranked as one of the 100 most powerful people in British culture. His success is so great that he owns eight different theatres in London.

If you have ever seen a big musical in a city, you might have seen his work. He has brought many famous stories to the stage, including Miss Saigon and Mary Poppins. He even helped bring the hit show Hamilton to the Victoria Palace Theatre. His shows are often very large and use many talented people. Whether it is a show about cats or a story about a magical nanny, his productions are famous worldwide. He has changed the way people experience stories through music and dance.
