The story takes place at Monkswell Manor, a guesthouse. There are eight people in the cast who play the characters. These include Mollie Ralston, the owner, and Detective Sergeant Trotter. Other characters include a man named Christopher Wren and a critical woman named Mrs. Boyle. The play is famous for its twist ending. Traditionally, the audience is asked not to reveal the secret ending to others. This keeps the mystery alive for every new person who visits.

Watching the play is a special experience. The story involves guests arriving at a guesthouse during a snowstorm. One guest, Mr. Paravicini, claims his car overturned in a snowdrift. The actors must act out a tense mystery to keep the audience guessing. Even the set has special details, like a clock on the mantelpiece. This clock is a prop that has survived from the very first opening.

There is also a tradition involving the leading ladies. When a new leading lady joins the cast, she and the retiring lady cut a "Mousetrap cake" together. This celebrates the passing of roles from one actor to another.

Agatha Christie wrote the play as a gift. It began as a short radio play called Three Blind Mice. She first broadcast it on May 30, 1947. The story was inspired by a real-life case from 1945 involving a farmer in Shropshire. Christie gave the rights to the play to her grandson, Mathew Prichard, for his birthday. She did not think the play would be a huge success. She once told a friend she thought it might only run for eight months. Instead, it became a massive hit that changed theatre history.

This play holds many amazing records. It is the longest-running West End show and the longest-running play in the world.

It opened in London in 1952. By 2022, more than 10 million people had seen it in London. The play reached its 30,000th performance on March 19, 2025. Since it began, more than 400 actors have played roles in the show. The production had to pause briefly during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. However, it re-opened on May 17, 2021, to continue its long run.

The play has connected many people to the world of theatre. In 1997, a charity called Mousetrap Theatre Projects was started. It helps young people experience the theatre in London. The play has also traveled to many places. It has been performed in Toronto, Singapore, and even Australia. Some movies have even been inspired by the play's mystery. For example, the 2022 film See How They Run is loosely based on it. This shows how one great story can reach far beyond the stage.
