It is a medallion designed by an art director named Herman Rosse. The medal is made from a mix of brass and bronze. It has a nickel plating on the outside to make it shine. The front of the medallion shows two masks. These are the masks of comedy and tragedy. The medallion sits on a black base with a swivel. In 2010, a larger and heavier base was introduced. This change was made so the award would feel more substantial in a winner's hands.

The history of the awards began in 1947. A man named Brock Pemberton helped found them. He wanted to honor Antoinette Perry, who was often called "Tony." She was an actress, a director, and a producer. She was also a co-founder of the American Theatre Wing. The very first ceremony was held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. At that first event, winners did not get medals. Instead, they received items like jewelry or gold compacts. By 1949, the famous medallion was used for the first time.

There are many different ways to win a Tony. There are many categories for different types of work. For example, there are awards for Best Musical and Best Play. There are also awards for Best Actor and Best Actress. Some categories are for "revivals," which are older shows performed again. In 1947, there were only 11 awards given out. Today, there are 26 categories in total. Some special awards are also given. The Isabelle Stevenson Award was started in 2009. It honors people who do great work for charity or social services.

Winning a Tony is a major milestone in a person's career. It is the theatre version of other famous awards. For example, the Oscars are for movies and the Grammys are for music. A person who wins all four of these is called an "EGOT" winner. The Tony Awards are also similar to other big awards in other countries. The United Kingdom has the Laurence Olivier Awards. France has the Molière Awards. Australia has the Helpmann Awards. These awards all show how much people value the art of performance.
