Miss World is the oldest international beauty pageant in the world.

It began in the United Kingdom in 1951. A man named Eric Morley started the event. He originally organized a bikini contest for a festival. This event became very popular with the press. They gave it the name "Miss World." Later, Eric's widow, Julia Morley, took over as the chair. Today, it is one of the "Big Four" major pageants. It stands alongside Miss Universe, Miss International, and Miss Earth.

The contest has changed a lot over many years. In 1951, the winner was Kerstin "Kiki" Hakansson from Sweden. She was the only winner ever crowned in a bikini. This caused much debate and controversy. Because of this, future contests used more modest clothing. By 1976, swimsuits were even replaced by evening gowns. In 2013, contestants wore a one-piece swimsuit with a traditional sarong. This helped respect the local culture of the host. The pageant also uses "fast-track" events to pick winners. These include talent, beach beauty, and sports competitions.

History shows that the pageant has faced many hard times. In 1970, protesters threw flour and ink bombs at the show. That same year, South Africa was banned from the contest. This happened because they sent both a black and a white contestant. The pageant also faced issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, many people in Puerto Rico tested positive for the virus. This forced organizers to postpone the big final show. The 70th pageant finally took place in March 2022. It was held at the Coca-Cola Music Hall.

Even with these struggles, the group does a lot of good. In the 1980s, they started a goal called "Beauty With a Purpose." This means they test intelligence and personality, not just looks. The organization has raised more than £1 billion for charity. This money helps children who are disabled or underprivileged. The pageant is now a franchise in over 100 countries. It has used its fame to bring attention to important causes. For example, it helped people learn about a woman named Amina Lawal. This happened when the contest was planned for Nigeria in 2002.

Watching the winners is a very exciting experience. Morley liked to announce the winners in a special order. He named the third-place winner before the second-place winner. Then, he finally named the number one winner. This method keeps the tension high for the audience. It stops the excitement from ending too early. Recently, Suchata Chuangsri from Thailand won the title. She was crowned on May 31, 2025, in Hyderabad, India.
