During these week-long events, designers and fashion houses show their newest collections. They use runway fashion shows to present these clothes to buyers and the media. These shows are important because they help decide upcoming fashion trends. The most famous events happen in the "Big Four" fashion capitals. These cities are New York City, London, Milan, and Paris. When these four weeks happen one after another, it is called fashion month.

These shows work by presenting clothing for specific seasons. Designers usually show Spring/Summer collections or Fall/Winter collections. In the past, shows happened months before the clothes were sold. This gave stores time to buy the items and plan their marketing. Now, many shows use a "see now, buy now" method. This means clothes are available to buy online right away. Some shows even use clickable videos so people can shop during the show. This change helps brands keep up with fast fashion retailers.

Fashion shows have a very long and interesting history. In the late 1800s, designers like Charles Frederick Worth began this work in Paris. At that time, marketers hired women to wear fine clothes in public. They would walk through places like racetracks or beauty salons. Later, the designer Paul Poiret became known as the "King of Fashion." He wanted to show his designs on live, moving bodies. He hosted large parties called galas to combine shopping and socializing. In 1903, a shop called Ehrich Brothers held a show in Manhattan. This was likely the first fashion show in the United States.

Many important dates helped shape the modern fashion week. In 1943, New York Fashion Week held its first event. This happened because World War II made it hard to travel to Paris. In 1958, the Italian Chamber of Commerce founded Milan Fashion Week. The French Fashion Federation organized the first official Paris Fashion Week in 1973. London Fashion Week was later started by the British Fashion Council in 1984. These big events have moved to different places over the years. For example, New York shows were held at Bryant Park for many years. Later, they moved to Lincoln Center and then to Clarkson Square.

Today, many people focus on making fashion more sustainable. This means finding ways to protect the environment while making clothes. Some brands use recycled materials to create their garments. In 2020, Gabriella Hearst organized the first carbon neutral show in New York. This show helped the Earth by using local food and local models. In 2023, Copenhagen Fashion Week set strict rules for all participating brands. They banned the use of fur and required recycled materials. These steps help the industry move toward a greener future.
