Murillo had a very specific way of working with light. Some of his early art used dark shadows. This style is called tenebrism. Later, he moved toward a softer and more glowing style. He was great at mixing real life with spiritual ideas. For example, he painted children in a heavenly glow. He also made very elegant female figures and angels. His paintings often look polished and beautiful. This style helped him attract wealthy people and leaders.

Murillo was born around December 1617. He likely grew up in Seville or a small town called Pilas.

His father was a barber surgeon named Gaspar Esteban. After his parents died, he lived with his sister and her husband. His uncle, Juan del Castillo, was a painter. Murillo studied art in his uncle's workshop. He learned to paint by watching the natural world. He also studied the work of other great artists like Zurbarán. This training helped him become a master.

His career was full of big projects and many successes. In 1645, he married a woman named Beatriz Cabrera y Villalobos. They had ten children together. That same year, he began a major job for a convent. He painted eleven canvases about the lives of saints. He also became a founder of an art academy in 1660. This academy was called the Academia de Bellas Artes. Murillo was very busy painting for many different groups. He worked hard until he died in 1682.

Today, you can find Murillo's art in many famous museums. Some of his works are in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. You can also see them in London and Saint Petersburg. Some pieces are even in museums in Texas and Oklahoma.

His style was so popular that many other artists copied him. Even famous painters like Gainsborough were influenced by his work. His talent made him a star in Europe. He remains one of the most important Spanish artists in history.
