It is an autonomous region located in the southwest of Mindanao island. Being autonomous means it has more power to govern itself than other places. The name comes from the Old Malay word "bangsa," which means nation. It also uses the word "Moro" to describe the Muslim ethnic groups there. This region is the only one in the country where most people are Muslim.

Islam arrived in this area a very long time ago. In 1380, scholars arrived in Tawi-Tawi to do business and teach. This led many local people to follow the faith. By 1457, the Sultanate of Sulu was founded. Later, the sultanates of Maguindanao and Buayan were also created.

These groups had their own strong cultures and identities. For many years, they lived as a separate territory from the rest of the Philippines.

History shows that the Moro people fought to keep their land. They resisted rule from the Spanish, Americans, and Japanese for over 400 years. In 1903, the United States started a program to move people to Mindanao. This brought many migrants from other parts of the country. These new settlers often took land that local people used. This caused many hard problems regarding land ownership and rights.

These troubles led to many years of conflict and struggle. Many local families felt pushed out of their own homes. Some groups even fought to protect their way of life. To find a way to live in peace, leaders held many talks. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF, talked with the national government. They wanted a region with more powers.

This led to a new agreement in 2014.

In 2018, the Bangsamoro Organic Law was signed into law.

In 2019, people held a vote called a plebiscite. They voted to replace the old ARMM with the new Bangsamoro region. This vote also allowed 63 barangays from Cotabato to join. The region is currently in a transition period until 2025. It serves as a way to test new ways of governing.
