The Moro conflict is a long struggle in the southern Philippines. It involves many different armed groups in the Mindanao region. This conflict is part of a much older history of resistance. For hundreds of years, the Moro people fought against foreign rule. They resisted the Spanish Empire for a very long time. Later, the United States also took control of the area.

This long history of fighting is called a national liberation movement. It is about the Bangsamoro people wanting to lead themselves.

Many things caused the tension to grow over the years. In the 1920s, the government moved many settlers to Mindanao. These settlers came from places like the Visayas and Luzon. Because of this, Christian Filipinos began to outnumber the Moro and Lumad people. This led to many difficult disputes over land. Many Moro people also felt the central government took their natural resources. They often lived in poverty while resources were taken away. This made the people feel very left out of their own land.

A major turning point happened in March 1968. This event is known as the Jabidah massacre. It involved the deaths of Filipino Muslim military trainees on Corregidor island. A survivor named Jibin Arula escaped by pretending to be dead. This news caused great unrest among Muslim students and leaders. In response, many groups formed to fight for Moro self-rule. In 1972, a professor named Nur Misuari started the Moro National Liberation Front, or MNLF. This group wanted to create an independent Mindanao through armed struggle.

As time passed, the movement split into several different groups. In 1977, Hashim Salamat founded the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF. This group wanted to create an Islamic state within the Philippines. In 1991, a man named Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani started the Abu Sayyaf group. Later, in 2008, a group called the BIFF formed because they disagreed with the MILF. These groups had different ideas about how to gain autonomy. The fighting was very serious and caused many people to die.

Some estimates say at least 6,015 people died between 1989 and 2012.

Today, there is a focus on making lasting peace. The Philippine government has made peace deals with the MNLF and the MILF. These deals help the Moro people have more control over their own lives. In 2017, a peace council helped settle around 138 local clan conflicts. While some smaller groups still exist, the goal is to build a better future. Peacebuilding helps the region move past its long history of war.
