It is also known as the Borneo confrontation. This undeclared war started because Indonesia opposed the creation of the new state of Malaysia.

Indonesia wanted to be a strong international power. The conflict became part of the Cold War in Asia. Indonesia had indirect support from China and the USSR. Meanwhile, Malaysia received military help from the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Most of the fighting happened near the border of East Malaysia on the island of Borneo.

The terrain was a very thick jungle. There were almost no roads in the border areas. Because of this, soldiers had to go on long foot patrols.

Both sides used light infantry for their operations. They also used rivers for transport and infiltration. The Commonwealth forces used helicopters to move supplies to their bases.

Before the war, Indonesia had a major diplomatic victory in 1962.

They gained control of Dutch New Guinea after a campaign of airborne and seaborne moves. This success made Indonesia feel like a major regional power. In 1961, the UK proposed a federation called Malaysia. This plan included Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak, Brunei, and Singapore. Indonesia initially felt okay about this idea. However, the Communist Party of Indonesia strongly opposed the plan.

In December 1962, a revolt happened in Brunei.

A group called the TNKU tried to take control. This revolt failed quickly when British troops arrived from Singapore. Following this, Indonesia announced its policy of Konfrontasi in January 1963.

The first recorded attack on a police station happened in April 1963. In 1964, the British launched Operation Claret. This was a secret operation to stop Indonesian infiltrations in Kalimantan.

As time passed, the situation in Indonesia changed. A coup d'état happened in October 1965.
