It is often called the Borneo confrontation. It started because Indonesia did not want to create Malaysia.

Indonesia's leader was Sukarno.

He wanted Indonesia to be a strong power. In 1962, Indonesia had a win in Dutch New Guinea. This made the leaders feel very strong.

In 1963, the new state of Malaysia was formed. It included Malaya, Singapore, and parts of Borneo. Indonesia sent people into the Borneo jungle to stop this. Most fighting happened near the border of East Malaysia.

The jungle was very thick. There were almost no roads.

Soldiers had to walk long distances on foot. They also used rivers and helicopters to move.

Britain, Australia, and New Zealand helped Malaysia. They used many troops to defend the area. Eventually, the fighting began to slow down. In 1966, both sides signed a peace deal.
