Babi Yar is a large ravine located in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

A ravine is a deep valley with very steep sides. The word "yar" actually comes from a Turkic word meaning gully. This site has a very long history. It was first mentioned in records as far back as 1401. For many centuries, people used the land for different things. It served as a site for military camps. It also held at least two cemeteries for Orthodox Christians and Jewish people.

During World War II, the site became the location of terrible crimes. Nazi Germany occupied the city of Kyiv in September 1941. German leaders decided to murder the Jewish people living there. They claimed this was a response to explosions in the city. On September 29 and 30, 1941, they killed 33,771 Jewish people.

This was a huge event during the Holocaust. Many other groups were also killed at the ravine. These included Soviet prisoners of war, Romani people, and communists. In total, between 100,000 and 150,000 people were murdered there.

Many different groups worked together to carry out these orders. High-ranking leaders like Kurt Eberhard and Friedrich Jeckeln made the decisions. They gave orders to units like Sonderkommando 4a. This unit was part of a larger group called Einsatzgruppe C. Other groups, like the 45th Battalion of the German Order Police, also helped. Even the German Sixth Army worked with these units. They planned and carried out the mass murders together. This shows how many people were involved in the occupation.

Some people managed to survive these very hard times. One famous survivor was an actress named Dina Pronicheva.

She was ordered to march to the ravine. She survived by falling onto other bodies and staying very still. She eventually climbed through the soil to escape in the dark. She later shared her story to help the world understand. Other survivors, such as Efim Vilkis, also told what happened. Today, researchers continue to find the names of those who were lost.

After the war ended, the world worked to find justice. Leaders like Paul Blobel were caught and put on trial.

The Nuremberg trials helped hold people accountable for their actions. Some leaders were sentenced to death for their crimes. Before they left Kyiv, the Nazis tried to hide what they did. They started a project called Aktion 1005 to cover the evidence. They forced prisoners to move the bodies and burn them. Even so, the history of Babi Yar remains a very important lesson.
