On March 5, 1940, the Soviet Politburo signed a secret order. This group included Joseph Stalin and Vyacheslav Molotov. They ordered the execution of many Polish prisoners. The goal was to take away the talent of the Polish military. They viewed the prisoners as enemies of the Soviet state. This decision led to the deaths of nearly 22,000 people.
