A ravine is a deep valley with steep sides. For a long time, people used this place for many things. It was even used as a cemetery.

During World War II, Nazi Germany occupied the city. In September 1941, German leaders made a terrible plan. They decided to kill the Jewish people in Kyiv. On September 29 and 30, they killed 33,771 Jewish people at the ravine. This was a very large massacre. Many other people were also killed there. These included Soviet prisoners and Romani people. In total, between 100,000 and 150,000 people were murdered at this site.
