The group is celebrated for a diverse musical style that spans indie rock, art rock, dance-rock, and baroque pop. This complexity is driven by the fact that most members are multi-instrumentalists. They do not stick to just one instrument during a performance. Instead, they switch roles and tools throughout their shows to create a rich, layered sound. This approach allows them to explore many different textures in their music.

Creating their unique sound involves a massive array of musical tools. The band members play traditional instruments like the guitar, drums, bass guitar, and piano. They also incorporate orchestral elements such as the violin, viola, cello, double bass, and harp. For more unique textures, they use the xylophone, glockenspiel, accordion, mandolin, and even the hurdy-gurdy. Electronic elements are added through keyboards and synthesizers. Some members even play the French horn. This wide variety of instruments allows the band to move between grand, sweeping melodies and rhythmic, danceable beats.

The band's formation began in 2001 through the friendship of Win Butler and Josh Deu. The two had previously been classmates at Phillips Exeter Academy. They began developing musical ideas while attending McGill University and Concordia University in Montreal. During their early rehearsals at McGill, they recruited music student Régine Chassagne. The early years were a period of significant change and instability. In 2002, the group traveled to a family farm in Maine to record an EP. Following this, the band experienced internal tension and several members left. Some departures even happened publicly during an on-stage argument in 2003.

Despite these early struggles, the band found stability and success. Win Butler's brother, Will Butler, and Tim Kingsbury joined to help the group continue. Drummer Howard Bilerman also joined in the summer of 2003. This new lineup helped the band secure a contract with the independent label Merge Records. To prepare for their second album, the band even converted a defunct church in Farnham, Quebec, into a private recording studio. This dedicated space allowed them to focus deeply on their creative process for the album *Neon Bible*.

This work earned Owen Pallett and Will Butler a nomination for Best Original Score at the 86th Academy Awards. Their music has reached a wide audience through various media. The song "Wake Up" was featured in BBC advertisements. They also performed with the legendary David Bowie on television programs like *Fashion Rocks*. The band's influence extends across many different musical and cultural spheres. They have been recognized by the Polaris Music Prize multiple times for their albums *Neon Bible*, *The Suburbs*, and *Reflektor*. Their ability to blend different genres makes them a bridge between classical arrangements and modern rock. By using everything from a cello to a synthesizer, they connect various musical traditions. This versatility has allowed them to perform at major global festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Glastonbury. Their career demonstrates how diverse instrumentation can create a lasting impact on the global music scene.
