They are known for a very unique and busy sound. Many members are multi-instrumentalists, which means they play many different things. During a single concert, they might switch instruments many times. They play the guitar, drums, and bass guitar. They also use strings like the violin, cello, and harp. Some members even play the accordion, xylophone, or a hurdy-gurdy. This variety makes their music feel like art rock or baroque pop.

Making their music involves a lot of teamwork and skill. The band members often change their duties throughout a live show. They use many tools to create their specific sound. These include keyboards, synthesizers, and even a French horn. They have even turned an old church in Farnham, Quebec, into a studio. This special place helped them record their second album, Neon Bible. They use these unique spaces to help their musical ideas grow. It is a very hands-on way to create art.

The band began in 2001 when two friends met. Win Butler and Josh Deu were classmates at Phillips Exeter Academy. They started developing musical ideas while attending university in Montreal. They eventually asked a music student named Régine Chassagne to join them. In the early days, the group changed quite a lot. Some members left the band during live shows or after recording sessions. Eventually, the core group found a steady way to work together. They signed with a label called Merge Records in their first year.

Arcade Fire has achieved great success with many famous albums.
