Alfred Peet was a man who changed how people in America drink coffee. He was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands, in 1920. His father ran a small shop that roasted coffee beans. After World War II, Peet worked as a tea taster. He worked in the Dutch East Indies and New Zealand. Later, he moved to San Francisco, California, in 1955. He worked in the business of importing coffee.

Peet wanted to make coffee taste better. In the 1960s, most Americans drank coffee from cans. He thought this coffee was very poor quality. On April 1, 1966, he opened his first store in Berkeley, California. He roasted beans in the back of his shop. He started with small machines that held one pound. Later, he used machines that held five pounds. He eventually moved to a large warehouse in Emeryville. There, he used a 100-pound roaster and a 300-pound roaster.

Peet was a very famous teacher. He shared his special way of roasting beans with others. Three men named Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker learned from him. They took his ideas to Seattle in 1971. They started a company called Starbucks. Peet later became distant from them. He felt they changed his style too much. He even said that Baldwin never learned anything from him.

Many other people started coffee businesses because of Peet. He taught many students how to roast beans. Some students started shops in Texas, Washington, and New Mexico. One student was George Howell. He started The Coffee Connection in Boston, Massachusetts. People say he helped invent the Frappuccino drink. Peet also helped a special area in Berkeley grow. This area is called the Gourmet Ghetto. It grew around his first shop at Walnut and Vine.

Peet sold his business in 1979 to Sal Bonavita. He stayed to help Bonavita for five years. In 1984, Starbucks bought Peet's four locations from Bonavita. Peet eventually moved to Ashland, Oregon, in 2001. He lived there until he died on August 29, 2007. He was 87 years old. Today, many people still enjoy the coffee styles he helped make popular.
