Alfred Peet was a man who changed how Americans drink coffee. He was born in the Netherlands in 1920. His father ran a small shop for roasting coffee beans. Later, Peet moved to California.

In 1966, he opened his first shop in Berkeley. He felt the coffee in the United States was poor. He wanted to make it much better. He used his own way of roasting beans to make them tasty. At first, he used small roasters in his shop. Later, he used much larger machines in a warehouse. He even sold large bags of beans to local restaurants.

Peet was a great teacher. He taught his roasting skills to others. Three of his students started a company called Starbucks in 1971. Peet later felt they changed his style too much. Still, many other people started coffee shops because of him. One student, George Howell, helped invent the Frappuccino. Peet's first shop helped a whole area grow. Many new food shops opened near his store. This area became known as the Gourmet Ghetto. Peet died in 2007 at the age of 87.
