As a boy, Clarence loved science. He liked to study insects and plants. His friends even called him "Bugs." Later, he worked in a place called Labrador. There, he saw how the Inuit people froze fish. They used the very cold air to freeze fish fast. This is called flash freezing. When the fish thawed, it still tasted fresh.

Clarence learned why fast freezing works. If food freezes slowly, ice crystals grow inside. These crystals can damage the food. When the food thaws, it becomes mushy. Fast freezing gives crystals less time to grow. This keeps the food tasting good.

Clarence made a new machine to do this. It was called a double belt freezer. It used cold liquid to chill two metal belts. These belts carried packaged fish through the cold. This invention helped make frozen food common in stores. He even started a company called Birds Eye. Many people still buy that brand today.
