Clarence Birdseye was a famous American inventor and scientist. He is known as the founder of the modern frozen food industry.

He was born on December 9, 1886, in New York City. As a young boy, he was obsessed with natural science. He even taught himself taxidermy through mail-in courses. His classmates at college gave him the nickname "Bugs" because he loved collecting insects. He eventually studied science at Amherst College.

Birdseye learned a big secret about food in Labrador. This area is part of Canada. While working there, he saw how the Inuit people froze fish. They used very cold air to freeze fish almost instantly. This is called flash freezing. When the fish thawed later, it still tasted fresh. Birdseye realized this could work for everyone. He saw that seafood in New York was not as good as the fish in Labrador.

There is a scientific reason why fast freezing is better. When food freezes slowly, large ice crystals form inside. These crystals can damage the tiny cells in plants or animals. When the food thaws, the liquid leaks out of the damaged parts. This makes the food feel mushy or dry. Fast freezing happens at very low temperatures. This gives ice crystals less time to grow large. It keeps the food tasting much better.

Birdseye worked hard to turn this idea into a business. In 1922, he began experiments with freezing fish. He later made a machine called a double belt freezer. This machine used cold brine to chill two stainless steel belts. The belts carried packaged fish through the cold to freeze them quickly. He received US Patent #1,773,079 for his work. In 1927, he also patented a multiplate freezing machine. This machine was used to freeze food for many years.

His hard work changed how people eat today. In 1929, he sold his company for $22 million. This helped start the Birds Eye Frozen Food Company. In 1930, they tested 26 different items in stores. These items included meat, spinach, peas, and fish fillets. People really liked the fresh taste of the frozen food. Birdseye won the Babcock-Hart Award in 1949 for his work. He was also put into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2005. He died on October 7, 1956, at the age of 69.
