Bill Mollison was a scientist from Australia. He loved the natural world. In 1959, he watched animals in a rainforest. He saw how the forest worked well. He wanted to build systems like that. This led to his big idea called permaculture.

Permaculture is a way to design farms and homes. It uses patterns from nature. Mollison co-developed this with David Holmgren. They wanted to make farming last a long time. It uses trees, shrubs, and herbs. These plants work together to keep the soil healthy. Mollison also made a herb spiral. This is a shape for growing herbs in small spaces.

Bill was a great teacher. He started The Permaculture Institute in 1979. He taught a special course called a PDC. This course helps people learn to grow food. By 2011, over 300,000 people had finished the course. They now teach others all over the world. Bill wrote many books to share his ideas. He died in 2016 at age 88. His work helps people live in a way that protects the Earth.
