Bernard Heuvelmans was a scientist and a writer. He was born in France in 1916. He studied zoology, which is the study of animals. He earned a doctorate from a university in Brussels.

Heuvelmans is famous for cryptozoology. This is the science of hidden animals. He made up this new name for his work. He wrote many books about these creatures. One famous book was published in 1958. It was called On the Track of Unknown Animals.

Many things inspired his work. He liked stories about dinosaurs. He also read about sea serpents. He wanted to find animals that people could not see. His books sold well to many people. However, most expert scientists did not agree with him. Some said his research was not careful enough. They felt he made claims that were too big.

Heuvelmans lived a full life. His wife, Monique Watteau, was an artist. She drew the pictures for his books. Later in life, he became a Buddhist. He died in 2001 at the age of 84.
