The story of Starbucks began a long time ago in 1971.

Three partners named Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker started it. They first met as students at the University of San Francisco. They were inspired by an entrepreneur named Alfred Peet. At first, they only sold coffee beans and equipment. They did not sell prepared drinks in those early years. The first store was at 2000 Western Avenue in Seattle.

Things changed a lot when Howard Schultz joined the team.

He became the chief executive officer for many years. He helped the company grow very fast across the West Coast. In 1987, he bought the chain and began to expand it. By 1992, the company had 140 outlets and made $73.5 million. In 1994, they bought a company to get the rights to the Frappuccino. This drink became very popular after it launched in 1995.

Today, the company uses new technology to help its business. They use a tool called blockchain to track coffee.

This helps them follow the journey from the bean to the cup. This connects coffee drinkers with the farmers who grow the beans. Starbucks also uses mobile devices for many sales. In 2013, more than 10% of purchases were made on mobile phones. This shows how much technology can change how we buy things.
