Costco is a massive retail company that operates many large stores. These stores are called warehouses. To shop at a warehouse, people must pay for a membership. This membership is the main way the company works. It allows people to buy goods at lower prices.

There is a specific way these warehouses work. Most stores use a simple loop for the main path. This path starts at the entrance and leads to the checkout area.

The stores are often designed to look very similar. Many buildings are built on a fast schedule of about 110 days. They sell many items in bulk. This means they sell large amounts of things at once. This helps keep prices low for the members.

The history of Costco began with a company called Price Club. Sol Price and his son, Robert, founded Price Club in 1976. They opened their first store in San Diego, California.

This first store was actually inside old airplane hangars. Later, Jim Sinegal and Jeffrey H. Brotman opened the first Costco warehouse. They opened it in Seattle on September 15, 1983. In 1993, Costco and Price Club joined together in a merger. This created the large company we know today.

Costco has grown to a huge size over many years. The company operates 924 warehouses all around the world.
