He wanted to help people by offering low prices. Because of his hard work, his company grew very large. It eventually became the largest corporation in the world by revenue. His family also became one of the wealthiest in the United States.

Sam learned how to work hard when he was a young boy. During the Great Depression, he helped his family by doing many jobs. He milked cows and delivered milk to neighbors. He also delivered newspapers and sold magazine subscriptions.

After he served in the Army, he opened his first variety store. He learned that keeping shelves full and having good prices was the key to success. He even used a small airplane to scout for new places to open stores.

Walton's journey into big business started with small steps. In 1945, he used a loan and his savings to buy a Ben Franklin store. He later moved to Bentonville, Arkansas, to open a new shop.

He faced hard lessons about rent and leases early on. These experiences helped him plan better for the future. He learned to trust his managers by letting them own parts of the business. This helped everyone work harder to make the stores successful.

On July 2, 1962, the very first Walmart opened in Rogers, Arkansas.

Sam did things differently than other big stores. Instead of building in big cities, he built in small towns. This meant there was less competition for his stores. He also focused on logistics, which is the way goods are moved. He used his own trucks and warehouses to deliver items quickly. This allowed him to sell name-brand goods at a discount.

Sam Walton lived a busy and meaningful life. He married his wife, Helen, in 1943, and they had four children. He was also a very active member of his church. In 1992, President George H. W. Bush gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is a very high honor for Americans. Sam died later that year from a type of blood cancer called multiple myeloma. He was 74 years old when he passed away in Arkansas.
