Ingvar Kamprad was a famous businessman from Sweden. He was the person who started IKEA. This company grew to become the largest furniture seller in the world by 2008.

Kamprad was born in 1926 in a place called Pjätteryd. His family had roots in both Sweden and Germany. His grandfather, Achim, moved to Sweden in 1896 to start a new life. This history of moving and starting over shaped Kamprad's life. He eventually became one of the wealthiest people on Earth.

Kamprad learned how to run a business when he was very young. At age five, he started selling matches to people. By age seven, he used a bicycle to deliver items to his neighbors. He realized he could buy matches in large amounts for a low price. Then, he could sell them one by one for a profit.

He later sold many other things like fish, seeds, and pens. In 1943, at age 17, he founded IKEA at his uncle's kitchen table. The name IKEA comes from his name, his home farm Elmtaryd, and his village Agunnaryd.

As the company grew, Kamprad's life changed in many ways. In 1948, he began adding furniture to his business. For a long time, most of his sales happened through mail orders.

He lived in Switzerland for many years starting in 1976. He eventually moved back to his home region of Småland in 2014. During his career, he wrote books about his life and his ideas. He wrote about his belief in simplicity in a book called "A Testament of a Furniture Dealer." He also worked with a journalist to tell the full story of IKEA.

Kamprad was well known for being frugal. Frugal means being very careful with money and not wasting things. Even though he was very rich, he lived a very simple life.

He drove an old Volvo car and flew on cheap planes. He was known to recycle tea bags and use both sides of a piece of paper. He even liked to eat cheap meals at his own stores. He believed that businesses should focus on saving money to keep prices low for customers. This way of working helped IKEA grow all over the world.

There were also difficult parts of his history. When he was 16, he joined some groups called fascist movements. These groups held very bad political ideas.

Kamprad later said that joining these groups was the greatest mistake of his life. He explained that he was influenced by the politics of his family. He died in his home in Sweden in 2018 at the age of 91. He left much of his money to help people living in northern Sweden. He wanted to help young people live and work in that part of the country.
