In the 1980s, Swiss watch companies faced a hard job. They were losing many customers to makers in Japan. Two big firms called ASUAG and SSIH were in trouble. ASUAG was very disorganized at that time. It owned more than 100 different companies. Some of these companies were large and some were small. Every single company did its own marketing and research. This made the whole system very messy and difficult to manage.

Hayek had a smart plan to fix these problems. He wanted to change how the companies worked together. He invested in automation to help machines do more work. He also used standardized parts for the watches. This means many watches used the same pieces. Using the same parts helped the companies save money. It also helped them make better quality products. This way of working is called economies of scale.

This new way of working led to the Swatch watch. The Swatch watch was very different from old watches. It had a very bright and colorful appearance. The design used almost half the parts of a traditional watch. Using fewer parts helped keep the cost low. This helped Switzerland win back the lower end of the market. The Swatch watch became a huge success for the group.

Hayek's work changed the Swatch Group forever. The two firms eventually merged into one large group. His son, Nick Jr., became the CEO in 2003. His daughter, Nayla, became the chairperson later on. Hayek passed away on June 28, 2010. He died from a cardiac arrest at the headquarters. At that time, his net worth was about $3.9 billion.
