Nicolas Hayek was a famous businessman.

He helped save the Swiss watch industry.

In the 1980s, Swiss watch companies had big problems. They were losing money to makers in Japan. One group, called ASUAG, owned over 100 different companies. Some were big and some were small. Each company did its own work in its own way. Hayek thought this was not a good way to work.

He made a new plan to fix things. He used automation, which means using machines to do work. He also used the same parts for many watches. This helped make the watches better and cheaper to make.

During this time, the Swatch watch was made. These watches were very bright and colorful. They used fewer parts than old watches. This helped the Swiss companies win back many customers.

Hayek was born in Lebanon. He later moved to Switzerland. He lived in a village called Meisterschwanden. He died in 2010. At that time, he was worth about $3.9 billion. His children, Nick Jr. and Nayla, helped lead the company later.
