His journey began with a simple idea about shoes. While studying at Stanford, he wrote a paper about Japanese sports shoes. He wondered if they could compete with German shoes. After he graduated in 1962, he traveled the world. In Kobe, Japan, he found Tiger brand running shoes. He met with Mr. Onitsuka to get rights to sell them in the western United States. He then sent samples to his old track coach, Bill Bowerman. Bowerman liked the shoes and became his partner. They shook hands on January 25, 1964, to start Blue Ribbon Sports.

Building a big brand takes time and hard work. Knight sold his first shoes from a green Plymouth Valiant car. He went to track meets to find customers. In 1971, the company changed its name to Nike. This name comes from a Greek winged goddess of victory. A student named Carolyn Davidson made the famous "swoosh" logo. She was paid $35 for the design in 1971. Knight said at first that he did not love the logo. However, he said it would eventually grow on him.

Knight has also been a leader in the movie world. He bought Will Vinton Studios in the late 1990s. He later changed the name to Laika in 2003. He invested $180 million into this new studio. This helped them make the successful film Coraline in 2009. His son, Travis Knight, became the leader of the studio.
