It is one of the biggest grocery operators in the country. The company also ranks as one of the nation's largest general retailers. They even have fuel centers to sell gasoline to drivers.

This company changed the way people buy food. In the early days, customers could not walk through the aisles. Instead, all the goods were kept behind counters. You had to ask a clerk to get items for you. In 1916, Kroger began using self-service shopping. This meant customers could walk around and pick their own items. They were also the first grocery chain to have its own bakery. Later, in 1967, they introduced the first bar code scanner.

This technology helped stores track what they were selling.

The story of Kroger began a long time ago. In 1883, a 23-year-old man named Bernard Kroger started his business. He was the fifth of ten children born to German immigrants. He used his life savings of $372 to open a shop. This first store was at 66 Pearl Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bernard had a very important motto for his work. He said to never sell anything you would not want yourself.

By 1902, the company had grown to 40 different stores.

Kroger has grown by buying many other smaller companies. In 1955, they began buying supermarket chains to reach new places. They bought Henke & Pillot in Texas in May of 1955. In June of that year, they bought Krambo Food Stores in Wisconsin. They also bought Child's Food Stores in Texas in July. In 1963, they bought a 56-store chain called Market Basket. This helped them enter the southern California market. In 1998, they had a huge merger with Fred Meyer. This merger included brands like Ralphs, QFC, and Smith's.

Today, Kroger is a massive part of the American economy. Many of their employees belong to groups called unions. About two-thirds of the workers have these agreements. The company is included on the Fortune 500 list. This is a list of the largest corporations in the U.S. based on how much money they make. You can find Kroger stores in many different states. They have grown from one small shop into a huge network. It is a great example of how a small idea can grow.
