Belyaev's life followed many different paths. He was born in Smolensk to an Orthodox priest. His father wanted him to follow the family tradition. Because of this, Belyaev studied at a seminary. However, he did not feel religious and became an atheist. He eventually left that path to study law. After he graduated in 1906, he became a successful lawyer. He even traveled around the world during his vacations.

By 1923, Belyaev moved to Moscow to work again. He worked as a legal consultant for Soviet groups. At the same time, he started writing his big science fiction novels. His first novel, *Professor Dowell's Head*, was published in 1925. Later, he moved to Leningrad in 1931. He lived there with his wife and his oldest daughter. He even met the famous writer H. G. Belyaev spent his final years in the suburb of Pushkin. During the Second World War, the German army invaded the Soviet Union. Belyaev did not leave his home during the invasion. He was recovering from an operation at the time. Sadly, he died of starvation in 1942 while the area was occupied. His wife and daughter survived the war. They were later sent to live in Barnaul, Siberia, for 11 years. Today, a memorial stone marks his assumed grave in Pushkin.
