Before moving to Deadwood, Al ran a business in Custer, South Dakota. He ran a large dance house there. The building was 30 feet wide and 150 feet long. It was very busy day and night. In early 1876, people heard there was gold in Deadwood. Many people left Custer to find the gold. This caused the price of land in Custer to drop quickly. A lot of land that cost $800 fell to only $50. Al moved to Deadwood to follow this gold rush.

In Deadwood, Al started a small business called the Cricket. It was made of canvas and lumber. The Cricket was a saloon with gambling and prize fights. Soon, he closed it to open a much larger place. This new business was called the Gem Theater.

The Gem was a saloon, a dance hall, and a brothel. Al used bullying and force to make women work there. One dancer was a famous woman named Calamity Jane. She once helped him find ten girls from Sidney, Nebraska. The Gem made a lot of money every night. It earned between $5,000 and $10,000 on average.

Life in Deadwood was often difficult and dangerous. The Gem Theater burned down on September 26, 1879. This fire also burned much of the town. Al did not give up after the fire. He rebuilt the Gem to be larger and fancier. He was good at making deals to stay in business. This helped him avoid trouble with Seth Bullock, the first sheriff. The Gem burned down a second time in 1899. Al did not rebuild it after that fire. He left Deadwood in 1899 and married Odelia Turgeon.

Al Swearengen died on November 15, 1904. Some people thought he died poor on a train. However, research shows he was likely murdered in Denver, Colorado. He was found in a street with a large head wound.
