Sister Ping was a woman who led a very large and illegal business. She was a leader of a group called snakeheads. This is a name for people who smuggle others into new countries in secret. Ping ran her business from Chinatown in Manhattan, New York. She helped about 3,000 people from China reach the United States. This work was against the law, but she was very successful at it. She earned more than $40 million from these trips.

Her business worked in many different ways. At first, she worked all by herself. She used fake papers to help people fly on planes. Later, her business grew much larger. She used big cargo ships to move many people at once. Sometimes, hundreds of people were kept below the deck of a ship. They stayed there for months with very little food or water. She also hired people to watch over her customers. These workers made sure people paid the high fees she charged.

Ping was born on January 9, 1949, in a small village in China. Her village was called Shengmei in the Fujian province. As a young girl, she worked hard on her family farm. She helped raise pigs and rabbits and chopped wood. When she was twelve, she survived a scary accident in a rowboat. She learned from that day that working hard was very important. In 1974, she moved to Hong Kong to start a new life.

In 1981, Ping moved to New York City with her family. They opened a shop called the Tak Shun Variety Store. This shop sold things to people who had moved from her home area. Her business grew quickly after 1989. During this time, many people wanted to move to the United States. In 2000, police in Hong Kong arrested her at the airport. She was sent to the United States to face a judge. In 2006, she was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Many stories have been written about Sister Ping's life. Her story is part of the history of Chinatown. People can learn about her in books and movies. For example, a book called The Snakehead tells her story. There is also a movie called Snakehead that was inspired by her. Her life shows how people sometimes take big risks to move to new places. Even though her ways were illegal, her story is still very famous.
