Ellis Alfred Swearengen was a prominent figure in the American Old West. He was an entertainment entrepreneur and a pimp. He is best known for running the Gem Theater in Deadwood, South Dakota. This establishment was a notorious brothel. He managed this business for 22 years during the late 19th century. Swearengen was a complex man who shaped the early history of the region.

Swearengen was born on July 8, 1845, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. His parents were Daniel J. Swearingen and Keziah "Katie" Montgomery. He was one of eight children. He had a twin brother named Lemuel. Swearengen lived in Iowa for most of his adult life. He finally arrived in Deadwood in May 1876. He traveled there with his wife, Nettie. Their marriage later ended in divorce due to spousal abuse. He married two more times, but both marriages also ended in divorce.

Before moving to Deadwood, Swearengen operated a business in Custer, South Dakota. He ran a large dance house there. The building measured 30 by 150 feet. It was extremely busy day and night. In January 1876, reports arrived that gold was in Deadwood gulch. This caused a massive gold rush in March 1876. Many people left Custer to find wealth in Deadwood. This rush changed the local economy quickly. Town lots that cost $800 two months prior fell to only $50.

Upon arriving in Deadwood, Swearengen first opened a small saloon called the Cricket. This building was made of canvas and lumber. It featured gambling and hosted prizefights. He soon closed the Cricket to open a larger establishment. This new business was the Gem Theater. The Gem functioned as a saloon, a dance hall, and a brothel. Swearengen used bullying and physical brutality to force young women into prostitution. He used his henchmen to help maintain this control. One of his first dancers was Calamity Jane. She once helped him procure ten girls from Sidney, Nebraska. The Gem was highly lucrative. It earned a nightly average of $5,000. Sometimes the earnings reached as much as $10,000.

Life in the growing town of Deadwood was often dangerous. On September 26, 1879, the Gem Theater burned down. This fire also destroyed much of the town. Swearengen did not let this stop him. He rebuilt the Gem to be larger and more opulent. This new building received great public acclaim. Swearengen was skilled at making alliances and financial payoffs. These actions kept him insulated from efforts to clean up the town. This included the work of Seth Bullock, the first sheriff of Deadwood. However, the Gem burned down a second time in 1899. Swearengen chose not to rebuild it after this second fire.

Swearengen left Deadwood in 1899 and married Odelia Turgeon. His death is a subject of historical debate. Some reports claimed he died penniless while trying to hop a freight train. However, recent research suggests he was murdered. An obituary and newspaper accounts show he was found dead in Denver, Colorado. This occurred on November 15, 1904. He was found in a suburban street with a massive head wound. This discovery was notable because his twin brother, Lemuel, had survived a shooting just two months earlier.
