Oppenheimer’s career began with steady professional growth. He was born in Friedberg, in the German Empire, to a Jewish family. His father, Edward, worked as a cigar merchant. At age 17, Ernest began working for Dunkelsbuhler & Company. This was a diamond brokerage located in London. His hard work impressed his employers very quickly. In 1902, at age 22, he moved to Kimberley, South Africa. He went there to act as a buyer for the company. He eventually became the mayor of Kimberley from 1912 to 1915. During World War I, he helped recruit manpower for the Kimberley Regiment.

In 1917, Oppenheimer took a major step by co-founding the Anglo American Corporation. He worked with an American engineer named William Lincoln Honnold to launch the firm. They received financial support from J. P. Morgan to start the business. The initial capital for the corporation was £1 million. Half of this money came from the United States. The other half came from the United Kingdom and South Africa. Oppenheimer served as a director and chairman of this company until 1953. In 1919, the corporation purchased diamond mines in South West Africa. This move challenged the existing diamond monopoly.

Oppenheimer also entered the world of politics. In the 1924 South African general election, he ran for office. He was elected to the House of Assembly as the Member for Kimberley. He held this important political seat until 1938. His business success and public service led to many honors. In 1921, he was knighted for his contributions during the war. This earned him the title "Sir." Later, in 1952, he was appointed as a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.

By 1927, Oppenheimer achieved his greatest business goal. He managed to gain control of the De Beers empire. This empire had belonged to Cecil Rhodes. Oppenheimer spent years building and consolidating the company. He created a global monopoly over the diamond industry. He became the chairman of De Beers in 1929. His leadership was not without controversy. He faced allegations regarding price fixing and antitrust behavior. There were also claims he did not release industrial diamonds for the U.S. war effort during World War II.

Oppenheimer's personal life involved significant changes and transitions. He married Mary Lina Pollak in London in 1906. They had two sons together. After Mary died in 1934, he married Caroline Magdalen Oppenheimer. Although he was born into a Jewish family, he converted to Anglicanism as an adult. He passed away in Johannesburg in 1957. His son, Harry Oppenheimer, succeeded him in his business roles. His brother, Sir Bernard Oppenheimer, was also a major figure in the diamond industry until 1921.

His legacy is preserved through famous objects and institutions. In 1964, a large, uncut diamond was named the Oppenheimer Diamond. This was done by Harry Winston to honor Ernest. Winston donated the stone to the Smithsonian Institution as a memorial. This diamond remains unpolished and uncut. Oppenheimer’s life connects many different fields. His work linked finance, engineering, and large-scale mining. He helped build the economic foundations of South Africa through his various corporations.
