Kimberley is the capital city of the Northern Cape province in South Africa.

It is situated east of the confluence where the Vaal and Orange Rivers meet. The city is globally recognized for its deep connection to the diamond mining industry. It also holds historical importance due to its role in the Second Boer War. Throughout its history, Kimberley has transformed from a frantic mining camp into a major administrative center. Today, it serves as the political heart of the Northern Cape.

The diamond boom began with several key discoveries in the mid-1860s. In 1866, Erasmus Jacobs found a brilliant pebble on the banks of the Orange River. This diamond, named the Eureka, sparked initial interest in the region. In 1869, the Star of South Africa was discovered nearby. A major turning point occurred in 1871 when Esau Damoense found diamonds on Colesberg Kopje. This discovery triggered the "New Rush," a massive migration of people to the area.

Within one month, thousands of men had cut 900 claims into the hillside.

As mining intensified, the physical landscape of the area changed drastically. Miners worked the kimberlite pipes, which are layers of blue ground containing diamonds. They dug through yellow soil to reach the valuable minerals beneath. This process created several large excavations, the most famous being the Kimberley Mine. This site is commonly called the "Big Hole" or "Kimberley se Gat."

The Big Hole has a surface width of 463 meters. Between 1871 and 1914, approximately 50,000 miners used picks and shovels to excavate the site. This massive effort yielded 2,722 kilograms of diamonds.

Business and technology advanced rapidly alongside the mining industry. Kimberley was a pioneer in electrical engineering and finance. On September 2, 1882, it became the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to install electric street lighting. It was the second city in the world to achieve this, following Philadelphia in the United States. The city also hosted the first stock exchange in Africa, which opened in 1881. Powerful businessmen like Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato built massive fortunes here. Rhodes eventually established De Beers, which later became a global monopoly on the diamond market.

The city's name also has a unique origin story related to British colonial administration. The settlement was originally known as New Rush or Vooruitzigt. When the British prepared to define electoral divisions, the Secretary of State, John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley, intervened. He found the name "New Rush" to be vulgar. He also found the Dutch name "Vooruitzigt" difficult to spell and pronounce. To solve this, officials named the town Kimberley after him. This change was officially proclaimed on July 5, 1873.

Kimberley experienced periods of intense conflict and social hardship. During the Second Boer War, the city endured a siege starting in October 1899.

The siege lasted until February 1900, and the British built concentration camps in the area for Boer women and children. Later, the city was deeply affected by the apartheid system. This system used laws like the Group Areas Act to enforce racial segregation. Communities were divided into categories such as European, Native, Coloured, and Indian. This led to the forced relocation of families and the separation of neighborhoods.

Many people in Kimberley actively resisted these unjust laws. In 1952, the Defiance Campaign saw volunteers occupying "Europeans Only" spaces. The Mayibuye Uprising also occurred in November 1952 following local unrest. Activists like Robert Sobukwe, the founder of the Pan Africanist Congress, also had strong ties to the city. After apartheid ended in 1994, Kimberley became a site for significant reconstruction. The Northern Cape Legislature was established to help bridge the previously divided city.

Today, the city continues to grow through new institutions like Sol Plaatje University.
