It serves as a vital economic and judicial center for the nation. The provincial capital is Bloemfontein, which also functions as South Africa's judicial capital. This means the province hosts important legal institutions. The current borders were established in 1994. This happened when the Bantustans were abolished and reincorporated into South Africa. The province has historical roots in the Boer republic known as the Orange Free State. It is unique because it is the only original province that did not undergo major border changes, aside from the reincorporation of the Bantustans.

\n\nGeographically, the province sits on a succession of flat, grassy plains. Most of the land rests at a general elevation of 3,800 feet. In fact, almost all the land is 1,000 metres above sea level. The terrain is mostly level but is occasionally broken by hills or small rock formations called kopjes.

In the eastern regions, the land rises much higher. The foothills of the Drakensberg and Maloti Mountains push the elevation above 2,000 metres. The geology of the region is part of the Karoo Sequence of rocks. This sequence includes shales, mudstones, and sandstones. The youngest capping rocks are made of Drakensberg Basalt. This diverse geology contributes to the province's rich mineral deposits. Gold and diamonds are particularly important and are mostly found in the north and west.\n\nThe climate in the Free State is described as continental. This means there are distinct seasons with warm to hot summers and cool to cold winters. The weather varies significantly depending on where you are located. The eastern areas, such as Harrismith, Bethlehem, and Ficksburg, are well watered. These higher ranges often experience frequent snowfalls. In contrast, the western parts of the province can become extremely hot during the summer. Aridity, or dryness, increases as you move toward the west. Most precipitation arrives during the summer months in the form of brief afternoon thunderstorms. In Bloemfontein, summers are hot and moist, while winters are cold and dry with severe frost.\n\nWildlife is a significant part of the Free State landscape. The southern plains provide ideal habitats for large herds of plain game. You can find black wildebeest and springbok living in these areas. The northern section features ridges and koppies that support different species. These areas are home to kudu, red hartebeest, southern white rhinoceros, and buffalo. The Soetdoring Nature Reserve near Bloemfontein is a place where visitors can see Southern African wildcats, zebra, eland, and wild dogs. A major conservation success occurred at the Laohu Valley Reserve near Philippolis. South African cheetahs were reintroduced there in June 2013 after a hundred-year regional extinction. In February 2017, three wild cheetah cubs were born there. These were the first wild cheetah cubs born in the province in over a century.\n\nThe economy of the Free State relies heavily on two main industries: agriculture and mining. The province is often called the granary of South Africa because of its massive food production. Cultivated land covers 32,000 square kilometres, while natural veld and grazing land cover another 87,000 square kilometres.

Field crops generate nearly two-thirds of the province's gross agricultural income. Animal products contribute 30% of this income. The province is also a leader in biofuels, which are fuels made from agricultural crops. Specific crops are very important to the national economy. For example, 90% of South Africa's cherry crop comes from the Ficksburg district. The province also produces 40% of the country's potato yield. In the mining sector, the rich goldfields reef makes mining the largest employer in the region.\n\nDemographically, the Free State is a diverse province with a growing population. According to the 2022 census, the population was 2,961,864 people. This represented an 8.0% increase from the 2011 census. Despite this growth, it was the slowest-growing province in South Africa during that period. The median age of the population is 28 years. The majority of the people, 88.9%, identify as Black African. Sotho is the most common first language, spoken by 72.3% of the population. Afrikaans is the first language for most White and Coloured residents, and it is also widely spoken as a second or third language by others. The White population has decreased significantly since the nineteenth century, when it made up 45.7% of the total population.\n\nThe province is organized into several administrative divisions. It is divided into one metropolitan municipality, which is Mangaung, and four district municipalities. These districts are further split into 19 local municipalities. This structure helps manage the various towns and cities. Major urban centers include Bloemfontein, Welkom, Bethlehem, and Kroonstad. The provincial government is based in Bloemfontein and follows a parliamentary system. The provincial premier is elected by the Free State Provincial Legislature. The current premier is Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, who took office in 2024. Additionally, the province is known for its unique healthcare service. It is the only province in South Africa that operates a free 24-hour dedicated rotor-wing aeromedical service from a public hospital. This service can reach remote areas in just 45 minutes.",
