This makes Gauteng the most densely populated region in the country.

The province is known as the financial hub of South Africa. Most of this economic activity happens in Johannesburg. Johannesburg is also the largest city in the country. Pretoria serves as the administrative capital, where much of the government works.

The province is also home to Soweto, which is the largest township in South Africa.

The name Gauteng comes from Sotho-Tswana languages. It translates to "place of gold." This name relates to the massive gold industry that began in 1886. This occurred after gold was discovered in the Johannesburg area. Before it was officially named Gauteng in 1995, the province was called Pretoria–Witwatersrand–Vereeniging, or PWV. The "W" in that name stood for the Witwatersrand. This is a series of low ridges and a plateau.

Geography plays a major role in the climate of the province. Most of Gauteng sits on the Highveld. This area is characterized by high altitude. Because of this height, the climate is cooler than other subtropical areas. Even though it is at a subtropical latitude, the air stays relatively mild. Precipitation often comes in the form of brief afternoon thunderstorms. Winters are typically crisp and dry. Frost is common in the southern parts of the province.

History in this region stretches back millions of years. Some of the oldest hominid fossils were found in the Sterkfontein caves. These include famous fossils like "Mrs. Ples" and "Little Foot."

In more recent history, the province was central to the anti-apartheid struggle. Many important events occurred here, such as the Soweto uprising of 1976. The province also saw the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. The Apartheid Museum now helps document this difficult era.

Governance in Gauteng is managed by the Provincial Legislature. This is a unicameral legislature, meaning it has only one house. It consists of 73 members elected through party-list proportional representation.

The legislature elects a Premier to lead the executive branch. The Premier then appoints an Executive Council of up to 10 members. This council manages departments like health, education, and agriculture. The province is politically competitive between the African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance.

Life in Gauteng is very urbanized and diverse. Many different languages are spoken by the residents. Zulu is the most common language, used by 23.1% of people. Sesotho, Sepedi, and Setswana are also widely spoken. The province also features massive infrastructure for travel and sport. O.R. Tambo International Airport is located in the Ekurhuleni area.
