Orange River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa. It is a vital waterway in Southern Africa. The river basin covers a massive area of land. This catchment area extends over 1,150,000 square kilometers. This size is equivalent to about 77% of South Africa's land area. However, about 38% of this basin sits outside South Africa. It reaches into Lesotho, Botswana, and Namibia.

The river begins its journey in the Drakensberg mountains. These mountains are located in Lesotho. At this high altitude, the river is called the Senqu River.

The water starts at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. Because it is so high, parts of the Senqu freeze during winter. This freezing can lead to droughts for people downstream. These droughts mainly affect the production of cattle and goats. From Lesotho, the river flows west through South Africa. It eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean.

The river's course changes as it moves through different landscapes. In the beginning, the river bed is deeply incised. This means the water has cut deep channels into the earth. As it flows through the Free State province, it enters large reservoirs. The river flows into the Gariep Dam and then the Vanderkloof Dam.

Near Kimberley, the Orange meets its main tributary, the Vaal River. After this meeting, the land becomes much flatter. The river then moves through the arid wilderness of the Kalahari and Namaqualand.

In its final stretch, the river reaches the Namib Desert. The desert terminates on the north bank of the river. During this stage, the river receives water from intermittent streams. One example is the Fish River. However, the volume of water from these sources is often negligible. The river bed becomes deeply incised once again here. A major feature in this section is the Augrabies Falls. At this site, the river descends over a distance of 20 meters.

Many different names have been used for this river throughout history. Early precolonial inhabitants called it ǂNūǃarib because of its black color. They also used the name Kai !Arib, meaning "Great River." This name is the source of the Afrikaans word Gariep. In 1779, the Dutch explorer Robert Jacob Gordon gave it a new name. He named it the Orange River to honor the House of Orange. This was the Dutch ruling family. Some people wrongly believe the name refers to the color of the water.

The Orange River is essential for the South African economy. It provides water for irrigation, industry, and mining. The Orange River Project was built to use these waters. This project helps provide water to dry areas like the Eastern Cape. The Gariep Dam is the largest dam in South Africa.

The river also generates hydroelectric power. Eskom operates power stations at both the Gariep and Vanderkloof dams. The Vanderkloof station was the first underground power station in the country.

Agriculture and mining also rely on the river. In flatter areas, the water is used for extensive irrigation. This has turned dry land into productive farms. You can see vineyards growing near the river.

The river is also famous for diamonds. The gravel in the river bed is rich with these gems. Several commercial diamond mines operate along the final stretch.

In local folklore, a mythical serpent called the Grootslang is said to live in caves near the river.

Today, the river is also a place for recreation. People enjoy rafting and canoeing on the water. This is popular because the water is high in summer. There are few dangerous animals in the river. Many companies run trips through the gorge below the Augrabies Falls.

The river finally empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It flows between the towns of Oranjemund in Namibia and Alexander Bay in South Africa. The mouth is often blocked by sand bars and rapids. This makes the river difficult to navigate for long distances.
