He was born in 1845 in Iowa. In 1876, he moved to Deadwood, South Dakota. People were rushing there to find gold. Al ran a place for fun called the Gem Theater. It was a large building. It was a saloon, a dance hall, and a place for sex work.

Al was not a kind man. He used force to make women work for him. The Gem made a lot of money. It earned $5,000 or even $10,000 in one night. One time, a woman named Calamity Jane helped him find ten girls. The Gem burned down in 1879. Al rebuilt it to be even bigger and fancier. He stayed in business even when the town sheriff tried to clean up Deadwood. In 1899, the Gem burned down again. Al left Deadwood that same year. He died in 1904 in Denver, Colorado. Some say he was poor, but research suggests he was murdered. He had a large wound on his head.
