Robert Beck was a famous American writer who used the name Iceberg Slim.

He is best known for his 1967 memoir titled *Pimp: The Story of My Life*. This book became a huge success, especially with Black audiences. By 1973, the book had been reprinted 19 times. It sold nearly 2 million copies during that time. Beck's writing offered an insider look at a very difficult world. His stories were eventually translated into many languages, including Spanish, French, and German.

Beck's life changed many times before he became a writer. He was born Robert Lee Maupin in Chicago, Illinois, in 1918.

His mother worked hard in a beauty shop to support him. She even helped pay for his college education at Tuskegee University in Alabama. However, Beck left school to join street culture. For many years, he worked as a pimp. He used the name Iceberg Slim because of his slim build and his calm, frosty temperament. He said he learned to hide his emotions from other men in his trade.

Writing became his new path after he left his old life behind. In 1961, Beck moved to Los Angeles and changed his name to Robert Beck.

He worked as an insecticide salesman for a time. His partner, Betty Shue, encouraged him to write his life story as a novel. They worked on drafts together despite some hard moments with other writers. In 1967, a man named Bentley Morris helped get the book published. Beck made two promises while writing: he would not make his life look glamorous, and he would not tell on others.

Beck's work reached people through more than just books. In 1976, he released a music album called *Reflections*.

On this album, he recited parts of his autobiography over funky music. The record was produced by David Drozen and featured the Red Holloway Quartet. People praised his ability to tell riveting yarns. His stories even moved into the world of movies. His novel *Trick Baby* was made into a film in 1972. That movie was very successful and earned $11,000,000 at the US box office.

Today, many artists still look to Beck's work for inspiration.

He is considered a major influence on hip-hop music. Artists like Snoop Dogg and Ice-T have connections to his legacy. Even some comedy shows use his life as a way to tell stories. At Harvard University, his book was even studied as a special kind of novel. Beck passed away in April 1992 at the age of 73. He left behind a massive collection of over six million books sold. His life remains a powerful example of how stories can change a person's path.
