She spent her life studying how people live together. She looked at race, gender, and social class. These are the ways people are treated in society. She wanted to understand how these things create unfair systems. Her work helps us think about fairness for everyone. She was a thinker who looked at the whole world.

Her writing style was very special and varied. She did not just write one kind of book. She wrote essays, poetry, and even books for children. Some of her books were about art and history. Others were about love and how people see themselves. She wanted her ideas to be easy for everyone to read. She believed that learning should be a way to find freedom. This way of teaching is called engaged pedagogy.

Gloria Jean Watkins was born on September 25, 1952.

She grew up in a small town in Kentucky. Her family was African-American and worked very hard. Her father worked as a janitor in a building. Her mother worked as a maid in some homes. She grew up in a world where people were kept apart by race. This was called segregation. These early years shaped her deep thoughts on justice.

She used a pen name to write her books. She called herself bell hooks using lowercase letters. She took this name from her great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks. She chose small letters for her name for a reason. She wanted people to focus on her ideas instead of her fame. She wanted the substance of the books to be the most important part. This helped keep the focus on the work itself.

Throughout her life, she taught at many famous universities. She taught at Stanford and Yale and many other places. In 2004, she moved to Berea College in Kentucky.
