It is the largest news network in the Middle East and North Africa region. This network is part of the Al Jazeera Media Network. That same network also runs Al Jazeera English. The channel is important because it offers a different way to see news. It often shows viewpoints that other local stations might not show. This makes it a very influential tool for news and diplomacy.

The way the network works involves many journalists and offices. It started with only six hours of shows each day. By the end of 1997, it grew to twelve hours. On January 1, 1999, it began broadcasting 24 hours a day. The network uses many offices, called bureaus, around the world. It has had workers in places like Russia and the EU. By the time of the Iraq War, it had 23 bureaus. It also employed about 450 journalists to find and share stories.

A leader named Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani founded the channel. He was the Emir of Qatar at that time. He first shared his idea for a news channel in August 1994. The station was officially started by a decree on February 8, 1996. The network first went on the air on November 1, 1996. The Emir gave the channel a large grant of $137 million. This money helped cover the first five years of work. He also helped cover yearly losses of over $100 million later on.

Many interesting things happened as the channel grew. It was the first Arabic station to have Israeli guests on its shows. In 2001, it became well known in the West during the war in Afghanistan. The network had an office in Kabul before that war started. This gave them great access to film important events. They even sold video clips to other news groups for up to $250,000. In 2003, a US plane hit their Baghdad bureau in Iraq. This event happened on April 1, 2003, and killed a reporter named Tareq Ayyoub.

You might know other news channels like CNN or the BBC. Al Jazeera is similar because it brings live news to people everywhere. It uses satellites to send its signal across the world. In the early 2000s, it was the top news source for many viewers. Some countries even tried to stop the channel from working. For example, Egypt banned it in 2013. During a crisis in 2017, some neighbors asked Qatar to shut it down. Many people fought to keep the channel open to protect press freedom.
