It is based in Doha, Qatar. A leader named Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani started it. He founded the station in 1996. At first, the station only showed news for six hours each day. By the end of 1997, it showed news for twelve hours. On January 1, 1999, it began to broadcast 24 hours a day.

Many people in the Middle East and North Africa watch it. It became a very popular source for news. The station was known for showing many different views. It was even the first Arabic station to host Israeli guests. This helped it gain trust from many viewers. In the early 2000s, it was the main news source for many people.

Al Jazeera has worked in many places around the world. It had an office in Kabul, Afghanistan, before a war began there. It also had workers in Iraq during the Iraq War. Some countries did not like the station. They tried to stop its broadcasts or close its offices. In 2017, some neighbors of Qatar asked to shut the network down. Many groups said this was wrong for press freedom.
